Kaiārahi Tikanga Māori – fixed term, part-time contract position available

Background to the role:

PANNZ is committed to seeking to develop and engender a genuine sharing of power, cultural confidence and shared understanding amongst Maori and non-Maori arts practitioners. We are seeking to create a culturally safe environment at the 2019 arts market and beyond, to encourage and promote collective cultural confidence in Aotearoa’s professional performing arts sector.

We are establishing a new role for the 2019 arts market to support PANNZ executive, staff and members in the development of cultural competencies, weaving Tikanga Maori into the vision, mission and delivery of the PANNZ Arts Market.

Purpose of the role:

To embed Te Ao Māori into the kaupapa of PANNZ, enabling tikanga Māori to strengthen the current practice of PANNZ within the context of the PANNZ Arts Market 2019.    

It is anticipated that the Kaiārahi Tikanga Māori will:

  • Feed into the development, design and delivery of the PANNZ Arts Market
  • Guide the PANNZ Staff and Executive through cultural practices and protocols appropriate to the PANNZ Arts Market.
  • Build strong relationships with Māori, specifically iwi, community leaders / influencers and other stakeholder groups across the performing arts.
  • Facilitate linkages between the PANNZ membership and Māori within a culturally-safe framework that is tikanga-based
  • Foster the development of Te Reo Māori at the Market and amongst the PANNZ staff and executive
  • Maintain an understanding of the views of Māori practitioners across the sector and communicate these to the PANNZ staff and executive.
  • Identify opportunities to improve PANNZ services for Māori producers, presenters and practitioners within existing budgets and support management to implement them
  • Work alongside the PANNZ Marketing & Audience Development Manager to identify and maintain a database and network of Māori arts practitioners and stakeholders.
  • Develop learning opportunities within PANNZ in areas of Maori language, tikanga and the Treaty of Waitangi.

Skills and experience:

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills in Te Reo Māori and in English, ideally a confident speaker ofTe Reo Māori
  • Proven ability to establish and maintain effective professional relationships across the diversity of Aotearoa’s performing arts sector.
  • Capability to coach and mentor other Māori producers and practitioners across all levels of experience.
  • Experience of strategic thinking and planning, working in a collaborative environment.
  • Project management skills, including experience of budget management
  • Ability to manage competing demands and expectations, to organise work effectively under pressure, and to prioritise what is urgent and important and take appropriate action.
  • Established networks and relationships within the New Zealand performing arts Sector, particularly within the Māori performing arts sector
  • Knowledge of and strong networks within the International First Peoples performing arts community

This is a fixed-term, part-time, contract position, which will run until March 31st 2019. The role is based on flexible working hours to be agreed between the successful candidate and the Executive Director of PANNZ and not to exceed a total of 180 hours for the duration of the contract. The PANNZ office is based at Q Theatre in Auckland. The PANNZ Arts Market is delivered by a small and highly motivated team, that are based around the country, however initially it is required for this new role to be based in Auckland. The PANNZ Arts Market 2019 is being held in Auckland, the week of 4 March, with the successful candidate expected to be able to be in Auckland during the Market and associated lead up time to the Market.
